Thirteen-year-old competitive rock climber Avery Gupton, known as AT, has been climbing since he was 3 years old. “The aspect of controlling what you do,” AT said when asked why he enjoys the sport.
Redpoint Climbing Gym is AT’s home gym, where the 13-year-old competitive climber trains multiple times a week. The facility is owned by his father, Dustine Gupton.
Outside of rock climbing AT, stays active by mountain biking with his dad and younger brother, Asher, and competing on the lacrosse team at Drakes Creek Middle School.
AT, trains multiple times a week at after-school lacrosse practice to prepare for upcoming games.
AT’s lacrosse coach is his father, Dustin Gupton, who leads the team during both practices and games.
On some days, AT goes straight from lacrosse practice to Redpoint Climbing Gym to begin his climbing training, a demanding schedule that can be exhausting at times.
At Redpoint Climbing Gym, AT climbs with his friend Parker Waddle, who often serves as his belay partner, ensuring safety on routes where ropes are required.
AT has long training days, so he focuses on maintaining his energy levels to stay strong and perform at his best.
Many rock climbers use chalk on their hands to increase friction, helping them maintain a stronger grip on the wall.
On Thursday, Feb. 19, 2026, AT entered a competition at Redpoint Climbing Gym with his climbing partner, Parker Waddle.
AT and Parker Waddle placed first in the competition, earning a total of 910 points.
AT talks with his mother, Tara, and father, Dustin Gupton, about the upcoming regional competition.
